Kyushu is the southern most of the 4 main islands and is also the warmest. Kyushu has a mountainous interior and mainly flat coastlines and a large amount of the island is designated as national park. The Aso National Park is located in the center and here you will find numerous active volcanoes. Japan in fact has 10% of the world's active volcanoes and most of them can be found in this region. Naturally all this geological activity means that you'll find hot springs everywhere. If you're interested in trying a hot sand bath at the beach, stop in at the coastal town of Beppu on the east coast. Kagoshima city in the south also has its own smoking volcano Sakurajima, which looks quite ominous across the bay. From Kagoshima, head north along the coast to Nagasaki city, perhaps the most famous city in Kyushu. Most industry and commerce in Kyushu tends to be located in the northeast, around Fukuoka, so we recommend avoiding this area and concentrating on the natural beauty the rest of the region has to offer.
